NAHAG 003 - 14 Days: Kenya Agricultural Tour and Kogelo Sightseeing Visit

This is a road safari into Kenya's agricultural sites across the country and sightseeing which includes wildlife, scenic views and birding. You will be able to sample the cultural life of the Kenyan communities, their day to day livelihood and entertainment plus their beliefs. The centre stage will be agricultural development and transformation of Agro business among the various communities. You will be able to visit both the commercial farms and peasant farmers in their various locations within Kenya. During your travel, you will be accommodated in 4 star hotels and home stays equivalent to 4 star hotel accommodations where applicable, unless where unavailable. You will travel in a 4x4 land cruiser(s) from Nairobi to various locations as per the below itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival -Nairobi
On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta international Airport, you will be met by our tour manager who will receive you and transfer you to your hotel for check in (we assume that you will arrive in the morning). After breakfast, you will have a morning rest after several hours flight to take care of jet lug. You will have your lunch by 1 p.m. After lunch, at 2 p.m., you will be taken for a Nairobi city tour visiting the Nairobi city centre, and other peripheries which include: The Railway station and the Museum, The National Museum, The Parliament, The Animal Orphanage and the adjacent Safari walk before ending at the Giraffe Centre. You will then return to your hotel for dinner and overnight. All meals and overnight at Windsor Golf Club / Hotel.

Day 2: Nairobi – Limuru
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for Limuru area where you will be able to visit the coffee farms, dairy farm and horticulture farms in the area owned by the hotel proprietor and other farmers. Proceed on to nearby area rich in tea plantation. Lunch will be at the Kent mere Club. You will have the afternoon at yourself relaxing or having a walk within the hotel compound or playing golf. All meals and overnight at Windsor Golf Club / Hotel.

Day 3: Limuru -Lake Naivasha Area
After breakfast at the hotel you check out and depart Limuru for Lake Naivasha area where you will find massive flower farms and horticultural farms around Lake Naivasha. You will then check in at a Lake Naivasha Hotel before visiting the adjacent flower farms and the horticulture farms around Lake Naivasha after lunch. The rest of the afternoon is left for Agro/Agri tourism around Lake Naivasha. Visit the famous Delamare Farm in Naivasha to see the Dairy cattle ranch before you proceed to the Dairy Institute located in the adjacent area. Dinner and Overnight at Lake Naivasha Hotel.

Day 4: Lake Naivasha-Hell's Gate National park
After breakfast, depart for Hell’s Gate National park and the famous Gorge within the park. Visit the Geothermal Electric production station and then to the Crater Lake for lunch before proceeding round the Lake Naivasha viewing the various agricultural activities before you return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Lake Naivasha -Lake Nakuru
After breakfast at 9. 00am, depart for Lake Nakuru National park. Arrive at Lake Nakuru and check in at your hotel within the National park. You will then have a rest before having lunch. Around 1530 depart the town for Lake Nakuru National Park and do some game viewing drives. After the game viewing drives, go back to Lake Nakuru Lodge or Sarova Lion Hill Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Millions of fuchsia pink flamingoes dominate Lake Nakuru National Park, as well as the fish eating pelicans and over 450 other species of birds. The lake is renowned as the most extraordinary bird spectacle in the world. Thousands of both little grebes and white winged black terns are frequently seen as well as avocets, ducks, stilts and the migrant waders during winter in the northern arctic. However visitors to the Lake Nakuru may also catch a glimpse of Thomson gazelles, impala, waterbucks, giraffes, buffaloes or even black rhino. Lake Nakuru National Park is a park that consists of various habitat such as the dying out euphorbia forest, the yellow barked habitat, the savanna like habitat as well as the lake itself.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru -Egerton College - Kabarnet - Eldoret
Depart for Eldoret after breakfast at your hotel. Drive past the Lord Egerton House at Molo to see the old ancient architectural know-how and listen to the the white Mischief. Visit the Agricultural activities within Egerton University College. Proceed and pass by the Kabarak University and proceed to Kabarnet Town. During this time, you will be able to view the Agricultural activities in this area while site seeing the various cultural ornaments displayed for sale by the road side. Maize and wheat crop are the major cash crops grown in this area. Lunch will be served at Kabarnet town before you cross the scenic Rift Valley to Eldoret town. Arrive at Eldoret and check in at a hotel in this fast growing town. Dinner and Overnight at Sirikwa Hotel or Similar.

Day 8: Eldoret - Kitale (The Grain Basket of Kenya)

After breakfast is served in the hotel, check out and depart for Kitale to arrive by mid-day. Check in at Kitale Club followed by lunch. The main crop grown in Kitale is maize and other subsistence crops. The maize is the fodder crop for all Kenyans; the maize flour is used for making ugali which is a house hold meal in every home in Kenya. It is distributed to most parts of the country. After brief stops to see the farms and talk to the farmers, visit Kitale museum before you get back to Kitale Club for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Kitale - Webuye - Kakamega
After breakfast, you will check out and drive through the Kitale town for a brief tour then depart for Webuye Town; home to the Pan Paper industry, see the agricultural activities within this area before you depart for Kakamega arriving ready for lunch at the Kakamega Golf Hotel. After lunch, visit Kakamega Forest, the only tropical forest left within this area. It is best explored on foot, trek through the forest, which is home to over 350 bird species, some of which are endemic to the reserve among other reptiles, monkeys and trees some of which are also endemic to the forest. After the walk, you will retire to the Kakamega Golf hotel or Rondo retreat Centre.

Day 10: Kakamega - Kisumu
After breakfast, check out then depart for Kisumu City, visit The Weeping Stone along the Kisumu-Kakamega road and hear fork lore about the huge bolder and why it weeps. Arrive in Kisumu City and check in at your hotel. After checking in, you will have a Kisumu City tour then drive to the Kisumu Municipal Market, The Kisumu Museum, then to Impala Park Sanctuary; home to a few caged animals such as the leopard, hyena, and baboons among others. From the sanctuary, you will visit Dunga Beach Point; a fishing point and fish market at the lakeside and also the Kiboko Bay tented camp in the adjacent location, you will then retire to your hotel.
Dinner and overnight at the Kisumu hotel or Sunset Hotel in Kisumu City.

Day 11: Kisumu -Ahero (Rice scheme) -Chemelil (Sugar Belt) - Kericho (Tea Plantations) -Kisii (Banana Plantations)
After breakfast, depart for Kericho Town, on the way visit Ahero Rice irrigation scheme, then proceed to Chemelil Sugar Company, Muhoroni Sugar Company and then to Kericho town . Upon arrival, proceed to drive around Kericho tea farms and factories. Visit one of the Factories and see the processes of making tea learn about tea production and the people of this region. Kericho being the highest tea-producing zone in East Africa. Have lunch at Kericho Tea hotel and then continue with the tour to Kisii area to see the production of Bananas before reaching Kisii town. Pass Kisii town a little and reach Tabaka where you will be shown how Soap stones are obtained and sculptured to make items of gift nature. Learn about Banana production and the people of this region. Return to your hotel in Kisumu for dinner and overnight.
Dinner and overnight at the Kisumu hotel or Sunset Hotel in Kisumu City.

Day 12: Kisumu City -Alego Siaya -Kogelo Village - Dominion Farm (Rice Plantation)
After breakfast, depart for Siaya, visit the home of two local peasant farmers in Kaluo and Ulafu villages where you will find both retired agricultural consultant and railway locomotive electrician respectively, are living on peasant farming products. You will then proceed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum before proceeding to Apoda Farm in Sakwa which belongs to the late father of the Kenya's Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Raila Odinga. Continue to Kisumu city but before branching at the Kit Mikaye stone. Listen to the folklore and the beliefs of the Luo people at this site near Kisumu city. Return to your hotel in the evening.
Dinner and overnight at the Kisumu hotel or Sunset Hotel in Kisumu City.

Kogelo Village Farming activities;

You will be conducted in both small farms and witness Oxen ploughing before you visit Nyang'oma Kogelo Village; the Ancestral home of the current USA president Barrack Obama. Have a conversation with the Grand ma Sarah Hussein Obama before you proceed to Siaya town and then to Yala Swamp where you will find a modern farm in place Dominion Farm belonging to Calvin Burgess of USA. This farm produces Rice as a major produce among other agricultural projects such as Aquaculture project, Bee keeping project and others. Lunch will be served at Siaya town hotel or at Austin Omala's home.

Day 13: Kisumu City -Narok - Nairobi
After breakfast, depart Kisumu for a long days drive to Nairobi passing through Kericho, then to Sotik and consequently to Narok town. On the way, you will be able to experience a very friendly climate since these are high altitude areas. Visit the Maasai Manyattas (homesteads) on your way to Narok town. At the Manyattas you meet the local communities who are mainly the Maasai people. Visit the wheat farms in the area then have lunch at a Narok hotel before proceeding back to Nairobi arriving in the evening for dinner and overnight at Intercontinental Hotel or Serena Hotel.

Day 14: Nairobi - Departure
After breakfast, you will be taken for shopping in the Nairobi City centre if you so wish, otherwise, the day is for you to pack and get ready for departure as per your flight schedule but not before you are treated to a farewell lunch or dinner at the Famous Carnivore Restaurant before your transfer to the Jomo Kenyatta international Airport for your departure flight.
